Low by Rick Remender and Greg Tocchini is set in a surreal future. Muted colors are splashed upon a loose sketch style that is not typical of most comics today, which often prefer a thicker, cleaner look. Low begins with a cryptic message of family, hope, and reality, that reads out over a scene in which a creature is climbing a cliff. It tightly grasps a marker which reads “R59”, pulling until it finally reaches the top. Fish swim around the climber, and we become aware that our story is set in the depths of the ocean.
The message is that of a man whom comes from an ancient family line of fighters and protectors of humanity known as “Cain.” The current ruler, and patriarch of the family, seeks to train his daughters for one day as one of them must take on the helm (an ancient suit, only usable with Cain DNA). His wife disagrees and instead wants to teach their children hope. In some ways, hope is a futile notion in the current ruler’s mind.
We then find our Cain family going out on an expedition, leaving the comforts of an underwater fortress. Johl, the Cain family patriarch, Stel, his wife, and their daughters, Della and Tajo, are forced into a trap. Without too many spoilers, I can say without a doubt that it did not end well for the Cain family.
There is so much historical depth in one issue that you never find out directly what they are talking about. During the bombardment, a leader of the attackers shouts “The hunters of Salus will pay for the slaughter of your kin.” From this one phrase, we can imagine a history riddled with civil war; we learn that special suits were built for certain blood lines, such is the case of the Cains; we also discover that because of an encroaching sun, humanity has plunged to the depths of the ocean to escape solar radiation. This story is really compelling so far and I can’t wait to read more.
